Racing Yachts
This sculpture of racing yachts is a model for a monumental sculpture along a waterfront is specifically designed to celebrate the maritime activity and recreational sailing. This sculpture of sailboats racing includes stylized silhouettes of waves, all elevated and mounted on a lozengeshaped base of cement whose shape resembles the inverted hull of a boat. This base will be fully tiled with thousands of shimmering, iridescent mosaics that simulate the patterns and colors of the waves. Many shades of blue: light blue, turquoise, cobalt, violet, violet blue and dark iridescent shades arranged in flowing patterns that simulate the light and dark shapes of color we see reflected in the swells of the waves.
Each of the four sails representing the four yachts is made of metal and is painted a brilliant glossy white. These four playful sails are poised at different angles of tilt and tucked behind 3 stylized cutout, silhouettes of undulating waves which represent a dark blue foreground arc of waves, a medium blue middle ground arc of waves and a higher background wave silhouette of palest blue. The image of the four sails symbolizes and celebrates the joy of competitive sailing.
The brilliantly tiled hull-shaped base sparkling with iridescent mosaics, functions to raise up the sculpture so it is more prominent. It elevates the sculpture above eye-level and adds an element of heroic scale to the work. My choice of colors for both the cut-out wave silhouettes and the mosaics expresses a playful, joyful celebration of the colors of the park, the waterfront, the water and the blue sky that is reflected in it.
